Here are some summer patio-sipping favorites.
Martina Prieto Pariento Verdejo 2008 - Spain Verdejo thrives in the hot/cold conditions of the mesa, but needs to be harvested with extreme precision, utilizing the best of technologies to capture the purity of fruit. This wine delights the palate with stinging nettles, ripe pineapple, dried mint, and pencil dust. Pair with fish, filet mignon, white cheese, ham and white meats. $15
Coteaux Du Languedoc Pic Saint Loup Rose 2008 - France The nose is full of citrus and flower petals with the quintessential rosé aroma of strawberry rhubarb. (60% Grenache, 40% Syrah)
Forgeron Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 - Columbia Valley - WA Beautiful aromas of blackberry, lilacs, currants and a hint of anise. The flavors are mouthwatering with a mixture of rich, dense dark fruits balanced by nice acidity and tannins. This wine has an elegant mouthfeel, followed by a long, supple finish. Perfect with barbeque, beef topped with blue cheese or a marinated grilled flank steak. (85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc) Wine Enthusiast 92 pts. $20

Dear Anna Maria,
Regular diners at the
restaurant missed seeing co-owner Dave
Pass the last weekend of
this month. We're all excited because
Dave was invited to attend the prestigious Oregon Pinot Noir Camp. Hosted by a
collective of 50 wineries for the trade only, participants must be invited or
"sponsored" in order to attend. Held in
the heart of Oregon's wine country, participants spend three days visiting
cellars, talking with winemakers, tasting - of course, and learning more in
intensive workshops. Yah, tough duty,
huh? When Dave returns
though, we'll put him to task. We'll
expect him to explain to us the "mystique and reality" of Pinot Noir; how it
all began 40 years ago (Oregon: the Birthplace of New World Pinot Noir); how it
developed; where we are today; how vineyard characteristic and the diversity of
vintage impact this highly sensitive grape; what entices more
winemakers to pursue the perfect Pinot. And what makes the perfect Pinot Noir?
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Best,
Anna Maria & Dave

Upcoming Events
Dinner Theater: Our last dinner & show package was so wildly successful, we decided to team up again with San Juan Community Theater for our upcoming production, The Connoissieurs.
Enjoy a 3-course meal, including a glass of wine, then stroll up to the Theater for local playwright, Ed Strum's, award-winning play, The Connoissieurs. Each dinner guest will receive a special gift package - but we can't tell you what it is - don't want to spoil the fun! The play runs every weekend, from July 23 through August 14, 2010. Theater tickets are only $16/pp and dinner is $25; please make your dinner reservations early as seating is limited.
October Beer Dinner: Pairing food with wine is sometimes more art than science. But what about Beer pairing? Join Coho Restaurant and Beverage Specialist Stan Reitan from Kings Market as we explore the marriage of food and beer. Coho's Chef Alphonsine Haslet-Phillips will prepare a 5 course dinner using local ingredients paired with specialized micro beers and Belgian style beers. October 1st, 6 p.m. $60++. Book early - this one's going to be a sell-out!
Fall Foraging in Friday Harbor: There's more to the San Juans than whales! Discover San Juan Island's wild food scene with a Fall Foraging Fiesta. This will be an action-packed, fun-filled weekend learning about the Islands, and the sustainably-farmed products available. Friday night we'll enjoy a presentation from one of the Island's most passionate foragers. She forages on a macro level, looking for new producers of sustainable ingredients for the Island's co-op and area restaurants. On Saturday, we'll forage on the micro-level. We'll tromp trails and fields gathering wild mushrooms and greens; glean fruit from trees and vines; harvest mussels and clams; collect eggs; visit farms for milk and meat; help with the wine grape harvest; stop at farms producing honey, goat cheese, cider and more. We'll break midway through and savor lunch at one of our favorite picnic spots. Then we'll head back and cozy around the fire to enjoy some wine & hors d'oeuvres, where our chef will help us cook up our bounty for dinner. On Sunday we will taste test common everyday ingredients including salt, olive oil and chocolate. Participants should bring appropriate attire: comfortable shoes for walking in mud and warm layers of clothing including rain gear, in case we encounter a bit of northwest rain and sunshine throughout the day.
Package price of $195 includes presentation on Friday night, transportation and admission to farms on Saturday, dinner and hors d' oeuvres and tasting on Sunday. Stay at our Inns and receive a complimentary copy of our cookbook for participating in this package. Mark the Date! October 8 - October 10, 2010

Special Summer Savings You may have read in an earlier newsletter or on the website, we had planned to open early on Friday afternoons for a happy-hour of sorts, offering special appetizers and wines. That was to coincide with the "Thank God It's Friday in Friday Harbor" street fair that the Chamber of Commerce was planning.
Unfortunately, the street fair didn't materialize, so we've decided to offer guests an even better deal. It's our 2-for-$70 now being offered every day! Yup, throughout the summer, two can come in any day and enjoy three course dinners including soup and salad, choice of entrée from our New Summer Menu and house-made ice cream for dessert, plus a bottle of wine for just $70! Got a third person joining you? No problem - we'll add another glass of wine and the same three-course meal for an additional $35. See something on the regular menu that looks too good to pass up? Go ahead and order - it's just a tiny upcharge.
This is the best dining value on the Island folks! But come in early - the special is offered to those seated from 5:00 to 5:45 pm. Since it stays light out late now, you can enjoy a leisurely meal, then stroll through town afterwards to walk off your dinner. I'll bet your cardiologist would be happy with that move! |
